World Health Organization (WHO) publishes article on benchmarks for equitable hip-fracture care and osteoporosis treatment in older people

December 9, 2025

In Canada, one in three hip fracture patients will re-fracture within one year and 22% of women and 33% of men who suffer a hip fracture will die within one year.

Worldwide, hip fractures cause major morbidity, mortality and long-term disability among older persons. The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined two key indicators within the framework of the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing to measure health system performance in providing care for older adults with hip fractures: the proportion who receive surgery within 48 hours of fracture; and the proportion who receive pharmacological treatment for osteoporosis post-fracture.

The WHO has published a paper making a link between the activities of the WHO Collaborating Centre and the five-year partnership between ESCEO and WHO to improve the management of osteoporosis around the world.
