BROKEN BONES

A broken bone maybe be a warning sign of osteoporosis.

A Broken Bone is Called A Fracture and May be a Warning Sign of Osteoporosis!

If you currently have a broken bone, please see your doctor before making medical decisions or if you have questions about your medical situation.
Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to weaken. Weakened bones are more prone to break or fracture  which can be painful. The terms broken bone and fracture mean exactly the same thing.

Over 80% of all fractures in people 50+ are caused by osteoporosis.

Why Do Bones Break?

Osteoporosis makes bones break easily with a minor event. A fracture or broken bone that happens when you…
  • trip, slip, stumble or have a minor fall from standing height or less at walking speed or slower
  • lift a child or pick up an object
  • bend to pick up a pet dish or to make a bed
  • twist or reach
  • cough or sneeze
  • or perform a simple task
…may be the result of OSTEOPOROSIS.

These types of fractures are called fragility fractures and are almost always due to osteoporosis.

A fracture may be your FIRST and ONLY sign of osteoporosis and can lead to MORE fractures

Most osteoporotic fractures occur in the hip, spine, shoulder or wrist.

Spine fractures are not always painful but can result in loss of height, a rounded back or both.

If you have already had a fracture, you may be at high risk for another fracture. A spine or hip fracture puts you at very high risk for another fracture – you need treatment for osteoporosis.

A broken hip is especially serious for older people, often leaving them disabled.

22% of women and 33% of men who suffer a hip fracture will die within one year

Any fracture after age 40 means you may need a bone density test and a fracture risk assessment.

Your risk of having another fracture can be reduced!

Ask your doctor about diagnosis and treatment options.
