The Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy Celebrates 20 Years
July 30, 2025
Osteoporosis Canada is proud to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy (OOS), a Ministry of Health–funded initiative focused on reducing fragility fractures and improving bone health across the province.
Recognizing that nearly 80% of individuals who suffer osteoporosis-related fractures do not receive appropriate care, OOS focuses on those over 50 to prevent severe fractures through a comprehensive public health approach.
Since its launch in 2005, the OOS has helped shape a stronger system of care for older Ontarians. This work has contributed to a 14.6% decrease in the age-standardized rate of hip fractures in Ontario. This significant achievement reflects improved prevention, screening, and treatment efforts across the health system.
These results have been made possible by the dedication of clinicians, researchers, program staff, health system leaders, and community advocates working together to improve care and outcomes for adults 50 and over across the province.
Congratulations to the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy Team!
