Rare Bone Diseases

Osteoporosis Canada has expanded its mandate to include rare bone diseases so that more Canadians can optimize their bone + muscle health.

By including rare bone diseases to its scope of advocacy, research and evidence-based education – Osteoporosis Canada can help meet the current and growing needs of those living with rare bone diseases needing support.

In a news release published in March 2023, Health Canada states “In Canada, one out of twelve people—many of whom are children—has a rare disease. There are thousands of different rare diseases that affect patients, their families and caregivers across the country. Unfortunately, treatments are only available for a small percentage of these conditions. Even when treatments that might dramatically improve the quality of a patient’s life are available, they are often unaffordable and out of reach.”

Hypophosphatasia

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare genetic disease affecting the development of bones and teeth affecting children and adults of all ages including infants, displaying different signs and symptoms depending on when the condition is diagnosed.
