Call for Nominations – Board of Directors

Osteoporosis Canada (OC), a registered charity, is the only national organization serving people who have, or are at risk for, osteoporosis. OC works to educate, empower and support individuals and communities in the treatment of osteoporosis and fracture risk reduction strategies.

Volunteering at OC is an opportunity to participate in a vibrant organization supporting an increasingly widespread population of people living with osteoporosis.  We are a national organization with a passionate consumer/patient voice which keeps us well grounded in our mission.

Call for Nominations

In accordance with the Osteoporosis Canada’s Bylaws, the Board Development Committee is responsible for recommending Directors for consideration by the Board of Osteoporosis for a term of three years to be followed by 1 renewal term of three years. There are a number of factors that are taken into consideration to ensure that geography and targeted expertise and experiences are considered with filling Board vacancies. Osteoporosis Canada values diversity.

The Committee is pleased to call for nominations to the Board of Directors of Osteoporosis Canada for the three-year term beginning on September 7, 2024.

Nomination Process

The Board Development Committee calls for nominations by:

  • Inviting expressions of interest from appropriate individuals who have been identified by members, and the osteoporosis community;
  • Inviting referrals from the Board, the Scientific Advisory Council, COPN, volunteers and staff.
  • Posting vacancies on Charity Village and Linked-in

The person nominating a candidate is responsible for ensuring that all requirements for signatures and information have been met. (Please refer to the attached Nomination and Consent Form.)

The Board Development Committee will review nominees who:

  • Are in possession of the identified skills and experience.
  • Reside in the geographic regions lacking sufficient representation on the Board. We encourage nominees from all regions and diverse communities.
  • Selected nominees will be contacted and a formal Zoom interview will occur in the month of May. All individuals will be informed about the outcome of the selection process. Candidates who have been nominated but not selected may be considered for other volunteer opportunities within Osteoporosis Canada, such as participation on committees of the Board.

Position Scope/ Location

The OC Board holds three Board of Director meetings every year.  There are three hybrid meetings every year, usually in Toronto and through Zoom. Travel is required to Toronto for the in-person meetings. Travel expenses to attend the in-person meetings are reimbursed by Osteoporosis Canada.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Board Development Committee of the Board is seeking volunteers to fill several vacancies that will be occurring this year.  Nominees should have shown leadership at the local or national level, have demonstrated excellence in their own field of expertise, and be willing to help to govern Osteoporosis Canada with care and vision.

After evaluating the strengths of the existing Board of Directors, the Board Development Committee is seeking individuals with the following skills but not limited to:

  • Previous Governance Board Experience
  • Expertise in Finance, Accounting, and Risk Management
  • Expertise in Human Resource Management, and Volunteer Development
  • Expertise in advocacy, and government relationship
  • Expertise in information technology
  • Individuals from diverse communities
  • Bilingual would be an asset

In addition to the specific expertise described above, the following criteria should be considered when nominating prospective Board members:

  • Full agreement with Osteoporosis Canada’s Vision, Mission, and Values
  • The ability to think ‘big picture’ and long-term
  • A desire to learn and grow
  • Prepared to make contribution in time and energy
  • A willingness to support the fundraising activities of the Board
