BC ADVOCACY

Osteoporosis Canada together with British Columbia Coalition of Osteoporosis Physicians (BCCOP) and Medicines Access Coalition – BC (MedAccess BC) are working together to advocate for British Columbians at high risk of osteoporotic fracture to have their medication/treatments publicly funded.

DID YOU KNOW

If you live in BC, people diagnosed with osteoporosis – a bone disease and who are at high risk for fracture do not have their medication/treatments publicly funded.

In BC, a person has to break a bone first in order to get medication coverage.  Once the fracture occurs, they go to their provider, who would then send them for X-rays, and fill out a form to apply for coverage.  Should approval be received, only then is there coverage available.

The criteria for publicly funded osteoporosis medication/treatments is not the same in other parts of Canada.

People who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and are at high risk for fracture can have publicly funded coverage for their medication/treatments in every province/territory except for in British Columbia. In BC, people who have been assessed at a high risk of fracture do not have any publicly funded options.

In BC, people diagnosed with osteoporosis must endure painful and debilitating fractures, having their condition worsen BEFORE being prescribed medication/treatments unlike in other parts of Canada.

Map of Canada with British Columbia highlighted

There are other barriers to British Columbians being able to access publicly funded medication/treatments for their osteoporosis before they fracture.

Even after meeting the criteria, there is further delay in starting treatment due to healthcare providers having to process paperwork and provide unnecessary tests.  OTHER PROVINCES in Canada do not have this restriction and the provider can prescribe a fracture prevention therapy to people who are at risk for fracture.

British Columbians with osteoporosis who have been assessed at a high risk of fracture do not have any publicly funded options and those with fractures must meet stricter criteria than other Canadians to receive other treatment options.

Are there other ways that people can have their medication/treatments funded?

This decision by the government not to fund equitable medication coverage and prevent fractures, is seriously impacting the health and quality of life of those residing in BC. The implications of this decision are far reaching and extend to private drug coverage where Many Private Drug Plans Won’t Even Cover These Medications If Pharmacare Doesn’t.

What Needs To Happen

The Ministry of Health needs to improve access to treatment in preventing the first fracture.

The BC Government needs to VOTE for equitable access to osteoporosis medication.

MLAs and the BC Government need to support this important issue.

British Columbians are being asked to reach out to their local MLA asking to represent their concerns and to vote for equitable access to osteoporosis medication and treatments.

BCCOP

The British Columbia Coalition of Osteoporosis Physicians (BCCOP) was formed in 2018 to address deficiencies in osteoporosis care. The coalition brings together BC physicians, and allied health professionals, interested in representing patient care needs to those agencies responsible for making decisions on access to care. BCCOP collaborates with Osteoporosis Canada and others with similar agendas. Our funding is from government and health authority sources.
