Negm

Dr. Ahmed Negm is a trained orthopedic surgeon with additional training in health research and rehabilitation sciences. Following his undergraduate medical training in Egypt, he practiced as a general practitioner for three years. Following this, he completed orthopedic residency training. Since coming to Canada, he has completed an MSc, worked in clinical research, and finished his PhD (Health Sciences) in November 2018.

He is currently a clinical/surgical assistant at the Orthopedic Surgery Division, Rockyview General Hospital, Calgary, Alberta. He also has academic roles, such as a research associate at the University of Calgary and an assistant professor (Part-Time) at McMaster University. He led several research initiatives to improve the functional performance of frail older adults with osteoporosis, hip fracture, osteoarthritis, frailty, or sarcopenia.

In recognition of academic excellence and leadership, Dr. Negm has received over 30 academic awards, including Alberta Innovates Post-doctoral fellowships and Osteoporosis Canada Ph.D. Studentship Research Award, Canadian Frailty Network Interdisciplinary Fellowship, and Ontario Graduate Scholarship.

Dr. Negm is currently the Osteoporosis Canada research committee chair, and he participates in the updated Osteoporosis Canada Guidelines.

Research

His research program includes diverse aspects of musculoskeletal (MSK) health. He completed a master in health science, studying the assessment and treatment of pain in people with knee osteoarthritis. For his PhD thesis, he continued to focus on significant MSK concerns for Canadians, including osteoporosis, physical frailty, and sarcopenia in older adults. He worked with the GERAS Centre for Aging Research (Hamilton Health Sciences) on the Fit Joints Trial, which is at the forefront of a paradigm shift in how we care for frail arthroplasty candidates.

The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a significant burden on MSK care in many countries worldwide. Dr. Negm worked with the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine Aging group and published recommendations to guide rehabilitation at the time of the pandemic. The recommendations provided strategies to prevent disabilities and limit the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and post-COVID syndrome on the Canadian population.
