Dr. Earl Bogoch Retires As Brookfield Chair

May 8, 2026

In 2020, Dr. Earl Bogoch was appointed the inaugural holder of the Brookfield Chair in Fracture Prevention.  This University of Toronto chair, a global first of its type, was established at the University of Toronto and St. Michael’s Foundation through the generosity of Brookfield Partners Foundation, which provided a $3 million grant.

Dr. Bogoch is an orthopaedic surgeon renowned in the field of fracture prevention, having developed the Fracture Screening and Prevention Program. He has been an active member of Osteoporosis Canada’s Scientific Advisory Council serving on its many committees including the executive committee and his model of care has been implemented in hospitals across Canada.

As the inaugural Brookfield Chair in Fracture Prevention, Dr. Bogoch has improved patient outcomes nationally and internationally through his clinical research.

Dr. Bogoch began a Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) 25 years ago at St. Michael’s Hospital with Dr. Dorcas Beaton and Victoria Elliot-Gibson.  The key feature was the participation of a dedicated co-ordinator responsible for managing the many steps followed by patients after fracture, from case-finding through investigation and risk assessment, to preventive treatment and follow-up.  It engages specialized colleagues from physiotherapy to internal medicine.

The model proved to be much more effective than usual care and resulted in a much higher proportion of at-risk patients receiving preventive care. With collaboration from Osteoporosis Canada and interested clinical groups across the country, this approach took root in numerous sites.

In 2020, when lack of funding to start new programs proved to be a barrier to universal uptake of the FLS system across the country, Dr. Bogoch created the Brookfield Chair in Fracture Prevention in the University of Toronto, working with the research group of Dr. Joanna Sale at St. Michael’s Hospital.  The Chair, a global first of its type, was funded by Brookfield Partners Foundation.

Clinical groups in different provinces/territories who sought to start a local FLS program contacted Dr. Bogoch’s team which provided guidance and seed funding for the start-up and two years of operation, with a goal to transition a high-functioning FLS program to public funding.

In the first term of the Brookfield Chair, funding was provided to seven sites in four provinces, five of which have gone on to obtain public funding to continue beyond the seed funding period. The remaining two sites are still within their first two years of seed funding from the Chair with interest from several additional teams from across the country.

Dr. Bogoch, as the first incumbent of the Brookfield Chair has now retired as the Term 1 Chairholder and will consult with the incoming Chair and support the transition from Term 1 to Term 2. He will continue to be available for consultations with sites interested in discussing FLS.

In 2025, Dr. Bogoch was appointed as Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his work over three decades in fracture prevention in Canada.

We thank Dr. Bogoch for his ongoing work and congratulate him on the successes as the inaugural holder of the Brookfield Chair in Fracture Prevention.
